You know how people sometimes talk about what terrible moms they are? Well, here's one that takes the cake.
We went to Ocean City, MD for the weekend. The weather was amazing, and we were able to wear out suits and swim in the water. The beach in front of our place and for a few blocks in either direction had a sand bar, so we could wade out and just walk around in knee deep water. My friends, a really great couple without kids, and Duncan and I decided to walk up the beach a bit to a better spot on the sand bar to walk around. DH stayed behind with John. The wife and I were walking around in the water and the husband had their dog and was just on the shore near Duncan, who was also in the water which was maybe chest high or so on him. Well, I turn around and Duncan is floating and flailing around in the water face down. I was several feet away and started screaming for my friend to grab him. He ran in the water and picked him up and Duncan started screaming and crying. Thank god.
How could I have turned my back on him? He doesn't know how to swim. I held him for a few minutes, then he and I walked back into the water b/c I didn't want him to be scared. He got over it really quickly, considering.
He told me he was trying to pick up a "snoop" (which is what he calls black rocks on the beach - NO idea where he got that name) and he slipped on the bank down into the water. Poor baby.
We all felt so guilty. My poor friend was beside himself b/c we had thought he was watching him. We decided not to tell my DH b/c he would probably divorce me. Well... maybe not that, but he would never forgive me. He's like Captain Safety, and I'm the one who let's Duncan get hurt to learn. I know I would never hear the end of it.
I will never be able to get that image out of my head of him face down like that. Guess who is getting signed up for swimming lessons ASAP...
