yeah, they do. :wtf: when will it stop? I swear it stopped for a bit and then started back up again. Is it because I'm still bleeding or having period # 083038403843084??

Well Yvonne was right. I have fricken thrush.

Nystatin
Gentian Violet
APNO
Diflucan

Are you nursing? Could it be thrush?

Jojo

I don't think it is. I was on diflucan as a preventitive for 23 days. 23 days!!!

And after the initial "latch" it's better but it feels like newborn day 2 latching. UGH!

(could it be that he nurses for comfort all.day.long??) I'm not joking...my husband just asked me if had a medical condition that we should be worried about because he is always on my boob.

What you are describing sounds exactly how I felt when I had thrush. The initial latch was unbearable and as it got worse, the initial latch was so bad I actually screamed in pain. After the initial latch it felt like he was rubbing the nipple raw. What it was, was the skin on my areola was peeling... !

Thrush can come back more than once. We went through it several times, the first time lasted over a month and was absolutely horrible.

Send your dh to Walgreens or a similar store for this: gentian violet (http://www.walgreens.com/store/c/de-la-cruz-gentian-violet-first-aid-antiseptic/ID=prod1550372-product). Smear it all over your nipples -make sure you wear crappy clothes you don't care about turning purple. It is an antiseptic but it will not hurt James. (The midwife actually had me swab some of it in Anthony's mouth as well) After you've done that tonight, make sure you put some nipple cream on after each of your nursing sessions tonight. That will get you through the night/morning until you can get to a doc. :)

When did the pain start or has it not stopped? If you do have AF right now that could be the problem. Tender nips usually go hand in hand with AF, don't they?

Yes. I know that whenever I get AF/O my nips hurt like a mother! But I am so over it already.

Yvonne--after he latches it's fine. I actually have some gentian violet. I didn't have thrush but the LC put me on a thrush regimen because of the antibiotics I had in the hospital for Group B.

I don't know if it's from AF or from his constant eating or what. He comfort sucks A LOT and when he is on the boob he pulls my nipple away from my breast and I have no idea why. (I also have flat nipples so I don't know if that could be the cause of this.)

I should probably call the LC tomorrow and have her look at them again. So frustrating.

Thanks!

I've never had tender nips during AF but I know that could be it. I would rather err on the side of fixing it if it can be fixed though. If she waits and puts off treatment to go to the doc and get told she has thrush her symptoms could end up much worse than they already are. If she treats herself, goes to the doc and just has sensitive nips then she has spent $3 for nothing. Little price to pay for a little peace of mind, I think. ;) I would hate for her to get to the point of pain that I dealt with. It sucked.

It could very well be that you are just sensitive because he's nursing so much. Like I said, with my past experience I would treat it, especially if I already had the stuff on hand. :) I never had antibiotics but Anthony did while in the NICU and the thrush was BAD. I didn't even know we had thrush until it was already really bad and didn't know about the gentian violet until a month after that! Really... it sucked. I think it traumatized me. :hehe:

So since I have the gentian violet should I use it? I've heard not to use it longer than 3 days or something that over use can cause oral cancer  (bad google!)

yvonne

Oral cancer? STOP GOOGLING! :hehe:

Directions say to use it once or twice a day, so, if you use it now and get in to see a doc before noon you'll have only done it once and it won't cause oral cancer. :hehe:

We're fighting thrush here for the first time in my life (figures!!). Tori is on diflucon and I am putting lotrimin AF on my nipples after each feeding. I just wash it off before she nurses and then re-apply afterwards. A PITA but seems to be working, not only is her mouth not white, her diaper rash is cleared up and my nipples are no longer so miserably painful! Worth a shot but sounds like you may have a problem with friction from him nursing so much.

NO GOOGLE!!! :hehe:

It took us ages to get rid of thrush when we had it. I didn't know I had it either but I had no pain just itchy nips. It took 2 rounds of nystatin and a round of dyflucan to finally conquer it. That and I washed EVERYTHING we could have possibly come in contact with. Twice. ;)

What's funny is I didn't have any pain until I started treating it with the Nystatin.

Lotrimin is an antifungal like Nystatin. I have heard Monistat cream would also work!

See, James has that nasty butt rash only when I eat dairy so the LC last time ruled out from being a yeast infection rash. He has the classic red ring. His butt was doing great and then I had some pizza and fake creamer in my coffee (whoops) and his butt is red again.

I do not have painful nips just sitting here or itchy (can you tell I REALLY do not want it to be thrush?!) Just that initial latch. It was better after my last bleeding episode and now it's begun again because I got my period again or my body just enjoys bleeding. I am also using APNO.

I've heard nystatin in counterproductive because it has sugar in it.

yvonne
11-01-2010, 10:24 PM
My nips never hurt unless he was nursing.

Never knew about Nystatin containing sugar. Nystatin did absolutely nothing for me, was prescribed by a doc, and when I went back after a month of not getting better, that is when a midwife pulled some gentian violet out of the drawer and told me paint myself up and nurse right there on the spot. I was feeling better the next day and it was completely gone three days later. (after that appointment I went and bought a vial and used it twice a day)

Months later, when DS was put on antibiotics again, he got a yeast rash on his butt and monistat (:hehe:) was the only thing that worked... I never did try the gentian violet on his butt though. I didn't want to ruin the cloth diapers. :hehe:

All purpose nipple ointment. It's supposed to be all sorts of healing.

Hope you figure it out! Mine were totally fine until a week before AF came again. Then SUPER painful when latching, but it didn't hurt after that. Also generally more sensitive. But it was def bad enough that I posted here. Hope its just that for you, too! :support:

So when you were treating yourself for thrush all that time did you treat James too? Does he have any of the white stuff in his mouth? I'm glad you're seeing the LC today. KUP! :hugs:

My nipples only hurt when Tori initially latched on and it was that toe curling pain you're talking about like when they are brand new newborns. OUCH! Started the difulcan for her and the lotrimin for me and the pain was gone within the first 2 days (noticeably better after just one day, GONE by day 2)

Oh, and to follow the advice Elaine was talking about we are sterilizing the pump parts every.single.time we use it rather than just once a day with soap and water in between. Also, I use disposable breast pads that I change every feeding. When I steralize the pump and any pacifiers/bottles I also steralize her dropper/syringes that I use for her meds. I keep a rotation of 3 or 4 pacifiers around so that every time she uses one it can get steralized and then use a new one. A PITA but I am hoping to be rid of this and that be it. I have heard SOOOO many women struggle with thrush returning again and again. Trying to be diligent.

Yes! it's a ton better. Lansinoh just doesn't cut it for me. I feel like I'm rubbing A&D ointment on them. The APNO has medicine and stuff in it for thrush. Here is an article:

http://breastfeeding.about.com/od/nippleproblems/qt/triplenipple.htm

It's pricey but very well worth it.

I just found my phone so I'm gonna call the LC today. The pain today isn't as bad as last night when I had posted this thread. Sandy, it's not that bad as the toe curling pain--maybe I over exaggerated but I can definitely feel him latching, kwim? My husband thinks he isn't latching correctly and I think he might just be right because he doesn't open his mouth wide enough when he sees my boob. He literally starts sucking before the nipple is in his mouth and I can hardly get his mouth open wide enough sometimes I have to wait until he starts screaming and then shove his face into it.

I have that problem with Tori (dang these chubby babies :hehe: ). I never had nipple pain when nursing the other kids but Tori just gets so excited when she sees it coming her tongue sticks out a little and she starts sucking before I am even near her. That or she tries to shove her thumb in her mouth and suck the boob at the same time.

Do I have to sterilize my bras too? If I wear disposable nursing pads can I just not worry too much about that?

yvonne

I never sterilized my bras. Well, the white ones did because I washed them in bleach but the colored ones didn't. I figured since I wore nursing pads all the time they weren't affected??
