BERLIN - A German zoo says a pair of gay male penguins are raising a chick from an egg abandoned by its parents.
Bremerhaven zoo veterinarian Joachim Schoene says the egg was placed in the male penguins' nest after its parents rejected it in late April. The males incubated it for some 30 days before it hatched and have continued to care for it. The chick's gender is not yet known.
Schoene said the male birds, named Z and Vielpunkt, are one of three same-sex pairs among the zoo's 20 Humboldt penguins that have attempted to mate.
Homosexual behavior has been documented in many animal species.
The zoo said in a statement on its Web site Thursday that "sex and coupling in our world don't always have something to do with reproduction."

How do they know the penguins are gay?

I'm being serious too!

Gaah, I'm really stupid. I should read the FULL article before asking questions.

I'm sorry but I'm kind of scratching my head on this whole "gay" penguin thing. First of all, male penguins are the ones that do incubate eggs, not the female. Secondly, are these male penguins interacting with any other female penguin? Why are we so quick to label them gay just because they tried to mate with each other? Some species of monkeys will have sex with both genders but as a form of keeping everything civil and stable in their community.

I think they're labeling them as such probably because they interact in a way that most heterosexual couples interact as well as the sexual thing. I wonder if these male penguins have only been with each other and have "mated for life" as heterosexual penguins do. I know what you mean about certain monkeys attempt to mate w/males as a submission thing, but I think the zookeepers would think that if these penguins were showing aggressive behavior towards each other that would be the case. It seems that these penguins are just "coupling" :idontknow:
