Almost all of my nails have ridges in them. Like bumper strips on the highway. What does it mean?? I'm scared to google :p

Are they vertical ridges or horizontal ridges? :hehe: I am asking for a reason...

I think they are hereditary. I have some, and my mom has always have them.

Along the length of the nail is no cause for worry but the ones that go widthwise across the nail are a possible concern.

Hmmm... mine are vertical, and not that noticeable. I think I read it could be a vitamin deficiency or something?

I have not had lines, but I have pits in my nail. It looks like someone made holes all over my nails.
My Endocrinologist told me I was not eating healthy and was malnourished. Um, okay....
I think mine is/may be caused by my thyroid issues.
They've also started separating from the nail bed. :(

since we are talking about nails Sadie's toe nail sheds. the other day the whole nail was loose and I went to lift it up a little and there was a whole new one underneath. Is that normal?

Ya I have the ridged lines on some of my nails, but the go length wise, I'm not sure what it is or if I should be concerned I guess it could be because I'm anemic right now I'm on 3 iron pills a day for like 8 months :(

Vertical nail ridges, which extend from your cuticle to the tip of your nail, are fairly common and often become more numerous or prominent as you age. Vertical ridges in your nails are not a health concern. Although the exact cause of such ridging isn't known, heredity likely plays a role.
If your fingernails change color or develop horizontal ridges, see your doctor. These changes may indicate underlying health problems, such as respiratory disease, malnutrition or even heart attack.

Mine start from the bottom all the way to the top :( It's on 7 fingers. OMG :hide:
I'm not taking prenatals should I?

Jo, I am not taking my prenatals anymore either. I couldn't stomach them so just stopped taking them once they told me I wasn't anemic anymore. I assume they wouldn't hurt for sure but it sounds like this is something to just call and ask the doc/nurse about and go from there. I wouldn't panic though.

If they are small and are not very noticeable they are probably just from low iron or Vitamin B. They could also be from dehydration. I would just try to change your diet a little or take some vitamin supplements and drink a little extra water. If you don't notice the ridge growing out or notice more ridges then call your Dr. If you have an appt with your Dr already for your thyroid or anything then bring it up.
I have them too. Maybe it is thyroid related? :idontknow:

I hope so! The ridges are deep. And I have been cutting my nails but they continue to grow with my nails so they don't leave.
Should I call the endo?

I took a pic with my cell. That's my worst one. I'll take a better pic later.

I did some googling and found that it can happen if you've had arsenic poisoning, malnutrition or a serious systemic illness. I'd say go to the doc and see what they have to say.

I definitely think that's worth a trip to the doctor. With all the thyroid issues I can't help but wonder if there's a connection.
oh god. I'm really freaking out.

9. Are horizontal ridges on my fingernails a bad sign?
No. You probably had an illness or a bad injury when the nail was growing in.

There is just way too much information and of course, all of it conflicting. Another good example of why google is Baaaaadddd. I wouldn't freak out because it looks like it could be as simple as Reanaud's (sp?) and being exposed to cold, or a vitamin deficiency, a short term illness, malnutrition...anything really.
I say this but honestly, I would probably freak out too! :support:
Thanks ladies. I called my endo and had an appt for July 1st but asked to come in sooner. The soonest appt was May 23rd! So I took it and told her to put me on the cancellation lists (with about 02840283203874 other people )

I would call them Jo, it's probably just a vitamin thing.

I think between just being pregnant and now nursing a little porker it's from malnutrition or vitamin deficiency. It's easy to get depleted through all of that w/o realizing. Keep us posted on what the endo says!

I have to agree with Michelle, but glad you got the appt I would have too. Let us know what they say!
