I read an article today about plans for an American studio to remake an excellent Spanish horror film, called El Orfanato. Its not a very old film so I can't really see the need for a remake. But it got me thinking about how people feel about foreign films. Will you watch them?

Ive watched a few...mostly Japanese horror ones and I really liked them LOL.

Some I wouldnt see, but some I would if I liked the plot idea.

OH and my husband rented a movie called Black Lightning from a RedBox like a month ago...turned out to be a Russian production with English subtitles. I actually really liked it.

Overall, Im cool with them as long as they are subtitled so I know what the heck is being said and have an interesting plot LOL.

I don't really watch movies often at all in general, so I won't weigh in on the poll. I have watched undubbed Kurosawa movies (with subtitles, though) and gotten into them. It really depends on the content.

Which Japanese ones have you seen? I've only seen Ringu and Ju-On. Normally I like the original films more but in the cause of Ringu, I preferred the remake, The Ring.

Have you seen Audition? That is by far the most f-ed up movie I have ever seen in my life!

Another Japanese movie I like that isn't horror is Battle Royale. Its sort of like a black comedy version of The Hunger Games.

I just watched the trailer for Black Lightning and it does look fun. I first looked it up on IMDB.com and the first return was for a blackploitation film and I was like, "That's an odd type of movie to be Russian and also not something I see Hillarie enjoying!" :)

I love foreign films but dubbing is an abomination! I can't watch dubbed films, the mouths not syncing up drives me insane & I think it loses the mood of the film.

That said, sometimes a remake is warranted. Like the Swedish film of Girl With the Dragon Tattoo was okay, both couldn't touch the book, the film of the second book was SO HIDEOUS that I refused to even watch the 3rd. The books are so incredible that I am glad Hollywood decided to remake them with a big enough budget and talent to do the books justice. Daniel Craig is an amazing choice for the lead, and I really am looking forward to it.

When I went to see City of God in the theater (in Fayetteville NC) the lady was like "You know this is not in English right?" I said "Um, yes of course." she said "Okay, I was just checkin', I hadda to give some folks their money back because they didn't realize it was in Portuguese" :hehe:

I love foreign films. I prefer them over most American made films. I don't watch dubbed films.

I do prefer subtitles because my French is really broken, and so is my Spanish... so I get lost easily with subtitles. If it's another language I have to have subtitles or I can't keep up.

I also enjoy the silent movies. There's this new one, it's a small film... can't remember the name, but it looks good and it's up for some awards, I think.

My all time favorite foreign film was Irreversible. It was such a sad, dark film. But man, oh man, did it have a good punch to it!

I have to agree on Swedish film remakes. Everyone I know was raving about the film, Let the Right One In. I tried watching the original Swedish version three times and found it so boring, but I really enjoyed the remake.

I guess sometimes I feel Hollywood thinks American audiences are too dumb to "read a movie".

C'mon everyone loves the dubbing in the old Godzilla movies. ;)

I've seen it! (And have it!) The title is in English -The Orphanage- but it is in Spanish with English subtitles. It is a good movie. :)

I'd rather read subtitles than listen to a dubbed movie. :)

Oh, and I didn't know it was in Spanish when I watched it the first time. I also didn't know the French movie High Tension (Haute Tension) was in French when I went to see that one in the theaters but liked that one as well. Both movies are creepy but good.

Having spent many many hours on buses in South America, I can tell you that there is nothing worse than a kung fu movie with English subtitles dubbed in Spanish. And if you though the movie K-911 was bad in English, watch the dubbed Spanish version. Oh my. Horrible.

I definitely prefer subtitles. Dubbing makes movies so cheesy.

I voted if they are dubbed, but what I really meant is if they English subtitles. I absolutely love the movie Pan's Labyrinth. I haven't watched many foreign films, but I love that one. I watched Let the Right One In and thought it was good but so creepy. I haven't watched the new one yet. I haven't brought myself to do it yet. :P

I don't like dubbed at all! I totally love subtitles and will watch all/any foreign films. Shoot, I watched tons of Bollywood as a kid and now have an affinity for Spanish films (although I can understand quite a bit in those).

Pan's Labyrinth was a very good film. I love foreign films. My husband is a big Audrey Tautou fan, so I've seen quite a few of her movies. Various other French movies. I like Bollywood, too. Monsoon Wedding, for example. There was a German movie we saw recently about the last days of Hitler and his inner cabinet which was absolutely outstanding. The one about Attila the Hun was also very well made.

I don't speak any foreign languages, but I love reading subtitles. Honestly, I forget entirely that the movies aren't in English.

Guess I'm the odd man out. I don't do foreign films dubbed or with sub-titles.

I'm right there with you. I dislike dubbed movies immensely and I hate subtitles even more. I miss too much of the movie reading the damn words. We bought Pan's Labyrinth ages ago and have yet to watch it because of the subtitles. I'm sure I'm missing some amazing movies but I'll deal with it. :hehe:

You havent seen anything til you have seen ALF in spanish.:hehe::hehe::hehe: Watched it all the time when I lived in Mexico for school.

Ive seen Grudge, Ring, The Eye(1 and 2), Reincarnation(my fav so far...freakin' spooky yet awesome), and Premonition.

Im sorry I dont recall all the actual Japanese names but those are the ones Ive seen.

Ive seen some Cantiflus(spelling is off)movies when I lived in Mexico.

AND I just recalled I saw a subtitled silent movie called The Passion of Joan of Arc(1928). Its French hence the subtitles. Beautiful movie and Im not really a fan of silent movies normally but it really was a great film.

Pan's Labyrinth was such a great movie. It was scary, beautiful, and heartbreaking all at the same time.

Was the Hitler movie called Downfall? That was an excellent film. There are hundreds of parodies of the scene where they tell Hitler that Berlin is being overrun on YouTube. Some of them are pretty funny!

Other films I've enjoyed are Cinema Paradiso, Amelie, Life is Beautiful, Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon, and Nightwatch (didn't care for the sequel though). I also love Miyazaki movies.

I should say, in case anyone looks it up... that Irreversible is backwards... the event sequence goes backwards the whole movie. It's hard to explain. Anyways, if you read about it or watch it, just be warned it's very violent. I wouldn't recommend anyone watching it if you've suffered sexual traumas.

Most of my favorite films are from Latin America like City of God, Man Facing Southeast, Central Station, Amores Perros and I haven't seen Biutiful yet but I am so so so looking forward to it.

I do love a good Bollywood movie though & adore ADORE the movie Monsoon Wedding, it's kind of Bollywood Lite, half in English half in Hindi and not quite as drawn out and OTT as something like Lagaan.

If you like Bollywood go get Mohabbatein. Omg my favorite Bollywood. I didn't like Monsoon Wedding at all, and I'm not sure why. I guess it wasn't "real" enough for me.

I will have to put it in my queue for the next time Sean leaves town. He hates the genre (both loves Monsoon Wedding, you're right it's not an actual Bollywood film by any stretch. But I do love it)
