View Full Version : Why wait?

I am wondering...

I bought Matt some Yobaby yogurts. I am trying to venture into new foods since the little piggie loves to eat!

Before buying them I forgot to look in my baby book from the pediatrician where it tells you what to start and when.

For dairy it said 8-10 months. Matt is 7 months...so why wait? Is there a reason? Do you think in 1 month he's going to change so much?

Also, I've tested dairy out with myself during the week (I've been upping my intake weekly) and he has no reaction to it. Thank God! I really miss my yogurt and cheeses!

So I gave him a bit on a spoon. Not the whole container. Just about a tablespoon for him to get a feel for it and he loved it! Do you think it's bad?

It's best to wait until they are 8 months with foods that are common allergens because the intestinal tract goes through a "sealing" process from 4-7 months. Until that process is complete, the chances of developing an allergy to a new food is higher. It usually completed around 7 months, but to be safe they tell you to wait until 8 months. Also with breastfed babies, they are using a lot of the lactase enzyme in their intestine to break down the large amount of lactose that is found in breastmilk so it's best not to introduce anything else that might deplete their lactase supply which can lead to lactose intolerance. Which is why pasturized milk products like yogurt and cheese are okay at 8 months (no lactose) but cow's milk is not reccomended until they are past a year and thus eating more solids/nursing less.

You can always call your pedi, but mostly they tell you to wait due to allergies.

I think it's best to wait since so many kids have problems with milk and lactose. I have always been able to eat soy and milk and Will never had a problem. We've tried to give him cheese, yogurt, and milk in foods but he just can't tolerate. He doesn't do well with soy milk or tofu either.

I would just keep upping your own dairy intake just in case and then in a month keep your fingers crossed!

Is it sad I wouldn't have known the answer to this? I knew it was a risk for allergy, so I just waited. Actually, I'm pretty sure I waited until 10-12 months, if not closer to a year with Tyler, I believe off of my pedi's recommendation. Yikes, I don't even know!

I only know because I was so anxious about Cash avoiding the allergies I suffered from & then our oversupply/lactose intolerance issues taught me about the lactose/lactase stuff. You usually never learn these things unless you need them! On the job training ;)

Yup, allergies. I think Charlie did/does fine with all cheeses and yogurts, but once it came to cow's milk he spit up all the time again. So he drinks soy now. I am pretty sure we didn't do yogurt until he was probably 9 or 10 months, but I'm guessing that's by my dr's recommendation.
