So I have been anemic off and on my whole life, not a big deal..I just try to eat better. Being a vegetarian, I have to make sure that I eat the right things to keep up with iron and protein. In the past my doctors gave me iron pills to take, I would take a few and then stop taking them because of the constipation.
For some reason they never told me to take colace or anything like that along with the iron, so I decided that I would rather be weak and exhausted all the time than deal with being in pain from being blocked up.
My doctor called and said that I am anemic again and prescribed the iron and colace. I really don't want to feel like crap anymore but I am scared to take it.
When I was pregnant and taking the prenatals, I didn't learn about taking colace along with it until after I had a horrible experience. I seriously thought that I was dying or having a miscarriage or something. I was in so much pain and had no idea what was going on until I finally went to the bathroom.
So...Maybe I am being a baby, but I am really scared to take the iron again. I know I should eat better, but it's just not happening.
I think I just need some reassurance that everything will be ok if I take the colace with the iron. The nurse said it would be ok, but I am still scared...that pain was worse than labor!:(

Awww Andrea! Maybe call you Dr. back and tell him what has happen in the past from the iron pills and see what he says. Maybe he can reassure you that all will be okay this time.

I talked to the nurse about it, and told her what happened and that I was scared. She kind of reassured me but also scared me.:eyeroll: She said that if I don't take the iron I will end up in the ER and if I don't take the right amount of colace with the iron...I will end up in the ER. :banghead:

It'll be okay girl! You really should take the Iron. Also, I forget the name of it, but there is this stuff that you can drink that will keep you regular. Farah knows the name because her OB told her about it too. I had a horrible bout of constipation in the beginning of the pregnancy when I had to quit drinking my coffee, and when I finally was able to go, I drank this stuff and it kept me regular. It takes kindof nasty, but you mix it in with a drink (I always put mine in Sprite), and it's not so bad. Kindof expensive, too, but definitely worth it to not have that problem. Maybe Farah will see this and know what I'm talking about. If not, I have some still at home (that I will totally mail to you). ;)

Aww Andrea! :support: Well you better take them! Maybe if you notice that your are going the bathroom as often and before He!! breaks loose maybe call them and say hey I am headed down the same path again. :pinkbluehug:
I'm sure everything is going to be okay! i'm so sorry you have deal with this. How yucky. I would take the iron pills and just make sure to take the colace too. Maybe you should try to eat some high fiber foods along with it. Maybe a bowl of Kashi in the morning and at night :support:

I have to take iron. I have been chronically anemic my entire life because of my celiac disease. My advice - Take some probiotics along with it. There is also a form of fiber called slippery elm (see here - http://www.iherb.com/Now-Foods-Slippery-Elm-400-mg-100-Capsules/796?at=0) that really really helps. I take 3 pills with each meal. :support:

I'm so sorry your having to deal with this andrea  I agree you need to take the iron! I had horrible constipation when i took my anxiety meds and would get clogged up pretty good and there were a couple times i ended up in the ER impacted!!! I know it's no fun  I would try some miralax (poweder u stir up and drink) and they do make a generic form of this or activia yogart! the colace really never did anything for me, hopefully it will help you! I hope you find some relief sooon!!!! I so know where your coming from!!! :support:

 I am so sorry you are dealing with this! I've been borderline anemic my whole life, prenatal pills actually tend to work the best for me. But, I only had the bad experiences with the bathroom when I was pregnant and colace became my best friend. I would just try to make sure you take the colace regularly, and maybe some benefiber or something to keep you regular?? Or that activia yogurt? I would imagine combining the colace & iron with something like that or what Natalie is suggesting would help.
Good luck! :support:

Pears and prunes. :twothumbs: Take the iron pills and eat lots of pears and prunes. Sprinkle bran in cereal or on anything you eat (either wheat or oat will do the trick). It mixes well into pasta sauces and soups.
Good luck! :support:

My sister has poop problems. First, to help unblock you you can take MiraLax. For your Iron.....take SLOWFe

It's time released Iron that makes you less likely to bind up. I would try that first and take the colace/miralax.
