View Full Version : Big Boy room or another baby room?

I have been thinking about what we are going to do room wise and furniture wise when the baby comes.

I don't know if I should just move all of Talon's furniture into the baby's room and buy him a new big boy bed, dresser, etc.. or if I should just buy another crib and dresser for the new baby. The current furniture Talon has is not really "baby" furniture other than the crib and glider that we still use to read and cuddle. What do you guys think? What did you or are you doing if you are in this boat? How long/until what age do you use a converted crib?

The thought of switching him to a regular bed just freaks the crap out of me and I don't think he is ready, but it's hard to say what it will be like in 5 or 6 months when we are ready to start setting things up.

That's a tough one. Tyler was already 3 when we had Lily, so he had already had his bed for awhile. I guess maybe see what you are comfortable with in a few months? You never know when he may start leaping out of that crib :hehe: Is it a convertible crib that you have? Would you want to buy another convertible bed?

I think it's really what you're comfortable with. You can make it fun if you switch him, or keep it comforting if you think it will be awhile.

Wow, I'm no help am I?? Sorry! :support:

The crib he has now does convert to a toddler bed. I just don't know how long they usually stay in that once you convert it??? He will be exactly 2 1/2 when the baby is born, which is why I'm kind of on the fence. I'm guessing by 3 he would be ready for a real twin bed, but can he still use the converted crib past 3? Aieeyaee yaeeei:eyeroll:

eta: I looked on Babies R Us website where we bought the crib and the recommend age is up until 4. hmmm That seems old, but maybe 3 1/2. I also read that if you are going to take them out of their crib you should do it at least 2 months before the new baby comes, so they don't associate the baby with taking their crib away. I am so confused, but starting to think maybe it would be better to keep his room as is to minimize changes and then once he is over 3 getting him a new bed to match his existing furniture. :eyeroll:

I have no idea. I'd probably keep him in his room and just give the baby the new room. Liam took the transition VERY hard and didn't want to stay in his new room. We had to make a super big deal out of it and get excited every time we went into it for like a month.

We're moving Ben out of the crib within the next week or so. I'm not overly happy about it but I'm also not going to buy another crib. He's a crazy sleeper and even with a bed rail I'm worried he'll fall out or wind himself up in the blankets horribly.

We moved Ben to the bigger of the two bedrooms a while ago so there's no transition there. We have a single bed we're going to set up in his room and once he's doing ok with that we'll move the crib to the baby's room. We've got some dressers already (2 small to put side by side like we did with Ben) and we're picking up a small table this week.

In other words, the only thing we're moving into the baby's room is the crib. All other furniture is/will be new.

We kept Rylee in her toddler bed until she was about 3&1/2 or 4. I can't really remember now.
We had to switch her from her crib to the toddler bed because she kept climbing out:eyeroll: We made a HUGE deal about it, and had her pick out a really flat pillow to get use to sleeping on one, even though it ended up on the floor every night:hehe:, and we had her pick out her own sheets and a fleece blanket that we used as a comforter. She was so excited to use the "Big Girl Bed"/toddler bed. I would make it a huge deal for Talon too. Have a small party even. Good luck sweetie.

Leah, I was on the fence about this at first as well. What I've decided to do is go ahead and get Cohen's big boy room ready (I'm using all of the furniture that was already in the spare room except we're getting a twin bed from the in-laws that will go in there), and I'm going to get the nursery ready for the baby. But Cohen will actually probably keep sleeping in the crib in the nursery until the baby is 3-4 months old. The baby will sleep in the pack-n-play like Cohen did in the beginning. I've read the same thing you have, that either you need to move them a couple months before, or wait until a few months after. Cohen doesn't seem to be ready for a big boy bed either, and I'm terrified of putting him in one. I just don't want to have to deal with him climbing in and out right now.

The only thing that worries me about this plan is keeping the baby in the pack-n-play that long. I had moved Cohen to his crib by about 8 weeks old, and it worked so well. I just don't want the transition for either of them to not go well.

We are using the pack n play too. We will not be buying a new crib unless I take the crib back I gave my sister and that just feels wrong.

Maybe you could do a test run too?? I was nervous about the switch, so what we did was put the crib mattress on the floor for a couple nights to see how he would do. It was a good way to see how it would go, but if it was a flop, at least it wasn't associated with the bed.

We will be using our crib for the baby, but we ended up inheriting a toddler bed anyway from one of DH's relatives. We still need to upgrade Duncan's bed again (he's 2.5 now) b/c the toddler bed is really small and will not fit him much longer. We used a Moses basket for Duncan anyway for the first few months, so maybe you could make it with just your crib? Guess it depends on where baby will sleep soon after being born as well as how big Talon is.

My oldest was 2 when our second child was born.
We already had him in a toddler bed and just used his crib for the new baby. It was a convertible crib but when I got pregnant we decided to buy a budget friendly toddler bed and use the crib for the new baby.

As for a dresser, we used one of my drawers for the baby stuff and when the new baby came we bought one of those cloth pocket things that hangs in the closet and holds clothes(or shoes). Thats what my oldest had as his "dresser".

This is the thing Im talking about:hehe: only ours was a khaki color.

As soon as we found out I was pregnant we switched Gabriel's crib around to the toddler bed. Then we moved him into his twin bed probably two months ago, give or take. I knew I did not want to buy a new set of baby furniture, so I just bit the bullet and hoped for the best with the transitions. I figured doing it right away would help give us plenty of time to work out kinks. He did great with both transitions!!

Good luck with whatever you decide to do!!

When you moved him to the twin, did you attach one of those rails to keep him from falling out? Does he ever get out of bed and play, cry or whatever?

We put pillows by Rylee's bed and moved her toy box by her bed too...we couldn't find a bar thing. She did great! She fell out of bed once, and that was it. She was fine. We also put the child door knob locks on the inside of her door so she couldn't come out during the night. She would just call us or knock on her door when she got up. Eventually though, she learned how to pop the lock off:hehe:

We have a safety rail on one side and the other is up against the wall. Surprisingly he does not crawl out of bed too often. If he's really pissed about bed time he will get out and bang on the door. But mostly, even if he's not really happy, he knows it's sleepy time and will fuss in bed. I don't know if I did something right or if I just got lucky. :hehe: And we really don't have any toys in his room, so there's no temptation to play with anything.
