We all love to talk about poop! :p

William has been on the goat's milk for about a month now and exclusively just the g.m. for over a week. He started off going from 1 poop a day to 4-5 poops a day. They were pretty soft and he's always been a grunter no matter what the consistency. We just thought maybe he was teething since nothing in his diet has changed other than the g.m. Last Friday he was in his carseat and was grunting, squirming, crying and screaming for 20 min trying to poop. When I got to where I could pull over he was sweating and when I picked him up he just limped over on my shoulder. Poor guy had a rock in his diaper of poop. Shortly after he had a super soft poop. Then the next day the same thing and it's been that way since. I am really confused as to what is going on with his bum. Like I said before nothing has really changed. He has been eating the same stuff. I even cut the juice out and have been giving him lots of water. Any ideas?

Ahhh the rocks.

Avery has had issues with pooping. He'd not go for a couple of days and then he'd hurt and cry and rock himself til finally something would come out. It was usually a hard lump the size of a baseball. Then a bit later a smaller amount that was softer.

Its made him fearful of pooping so even if its not hard he wont allow himself to go. We've had to bribe him with a candy for pooping and 5 seconds later he's done it.:p

Now we've discovered that fiber helps him go regularly(as in daily and usually at least twice). We have him eating those Fiber One breakfast bars and they do the trick like magic.

I really have a hard time suggesting anything cuz it can vary so much but maybe putting some sort of fiber supplement in a drink or a food with lots of fiber...maybe that will help keep it from being so hard?

That's what Addie had on Christmas (and I believe being so backed up was what caused her to puke all night Christmas Eve and keep her fever). She had done that once a few weeks before that and she had been been trying all day and I finally got down in the floor with her, took her diaper down, and pulled her butt cheeks apart because it was actually stuck out and she couldn't push it out or break it off on her own. :(

Anyway, milk can constipate. I'm not an expert by any means and have no clue about goats milk, but I do remember the doctor telling me that when I weaned her and switched to milk that she could have problems until she got used to it. I'm pretty sure I remember Robin telling me that Maddy had issues switching and that her doctor said to mix a little Metamucil in with her water.

When I took her for the 15 month checkup, Addie's pedi told me if she had a really hard time pooping again I could give her 1 tsp of milk of magnesia.

i heard milk can constipate too. Maybe give him some prune juice diluted with water every day to help him. Poor guy

I always use Pear juice as a "laxative" since it's a bit more gentle than prune juice. That's what my pediatrician recommends and it's never made my kids go from constipated to diarrhea, usually just softens things up and helps them stay more regular.

I have had that problem with my kids when they transitioned to milk. The doctor told me if it appears they are having trouble passing a bowel movement to "help" them by applying slight counterpressure to the perenium (sp?). Poor guy :support:

We did use prune juice on Av and it helped a little but apple was more effective on his system(then it stopped LOL).

Gerber sells little bottles of apple/prune juice that seemed to be a good balance for Addie.

Today he has a super soft poop to where I didn't even know he had pooped until it was too late. :hehe: I started giving him some powdered vitamins yesterday that have probiotics in them so hopefully that will help. I have been trying to give him more fruit too, less bananas and bread. He could live off of toast and bananas if I let him. I do have some powdered Benefiber in my cabinet though, do you think that's safe to give him?

I would call and ask the pediatrician but I would assume a small dose wouldn't be bad. I just don't know how much for his age/size.

Benefiber might have been what Robin gave to Maddy now that you mention it...I'm not sure. Let me go through my PM history and see what I can find.

ETA: Apparently I'm good at deleting my PMs. :( I'm thinking it was like 1 tsp in 8 oz of water, though.

I was going to suggest pears or pear juice too. It's worked wonders for me and for Ben. We each have a pear a day and it does the trick. Even missing one day can give Ben little pebble poo's so I make a point of having lots of pears in the house all the time. Any fruit is good to keep the system moving but pears have a high fiber content so they are great and taste way better than prunes. :hehe:

A friend of mine, who has 3 girls, has had problem with every one of them when she started them drinking whole milk. Her youngest eats prunes like candy and it still doesn't help. All were fine before they started cow's milk but as soon as they started drinking it everything backed up.

I hope it's just his little system getting used to the goat's milk and that he'll be back to normal soon. Poor little guy!

Poor little guy! I agree on the pear juice. That's what I always gave Cohen when he was constipated.

Yep Julie you were right. Maddy had problems, and still does. Mike says god gave him a baby girl with a broken butt. lol Anytime I give her milk, I put a tsp of the generic form of benefiber in her cup. Works perfectly. They started us out on Milk of Magnesia but she had horrible loose runny stool. To the point where she was soaking thru 2 or 3 outfits a day, and I told the pedi that I wasn't comfortable with that at all. So she had us switch and we have no problem. Maddy is a huge cheese eater so that doesn't help either

:ditto:

Maybe you can make him some fiber muffins.

Well he has been taking the vitamins, only having milk with meals and more water, plus he had pears yesterday and he still had a hard poop with a big soft poop after. But he did actually go on the potty and didn't cry! I think I will put benefiber in his milk to try now. Poor little guy got his mom's mouth and his dad's butt!

We never noticed a difference with the goat's milk and pooping actually. I would probably try what the other ladies have said and give him some juice. Pear juice always seemed to do the trick for Talon.
