View Full Version : URGENT question: toddler illness related

Averie has been sick. She was not eating well and had a runny nose for the past few days. This all escalated to a climax yesterday when not only was she not eating and had a runny nose but she was vomitting, coughing, wheezing/rattling and extremely fussy. She also hasn't slept much (even for her, the anti-sleeper) for 4 days now. She didn't start running a fever until about 5 or 6:00 last night and it never got over 101 so I didn't treat with any fever reducer.
None of that is the actual major concern at this point. We're waiting for the doctor's office to open but she's been in the same diaper since 7:00 last night but it's COMPLETELY dry. When should I really, really worry about dehydration?

so she's not drinking either?

She'll only drink breastmilk but every time she does she pukes :( I have tried pedialyte, water, juice....everything and she just won't eat or drink anything but breastmilk.

Sadie started like that too last week and she ended up with the flu. She's been on the temaflu but she won't eat anything also. I called the dr and they want to see her to check her weight today.
I know when i was sick they took me in for some IV, not sure but the dr. might want to get some fluids in her that way. Sorry I'm not much help but the whole dry diaper thing might be that she is dehydrated and the iv is the only thing i think can help. Which sucks for a baby.

Gosh, I hope that's now our only solution but I am extremely concerned. I called the dr's office but am waiting for a nurse to call me back. I did change her diaper after posting this and it had *maybe* an ouce worth of urine in it...maybe. And that was after 13 1/2 hours :(

wow, I hope they call you back soon. I would just keep breast feeding her, hopefully enough gets in her before she vomits.

Im not too sure about it myself. Do you have one of those mesh feeders? Would she maybe suck on an ice cube? Or maybe a wet washcloth?

I tried the mesh teether and even a bottle with ice cubes in it since bottles are such a novelty to her anyway and nadda. Right now she's writhing in my lap fussing. She's so miserable :( Good thing is, she hasn't puked this morning but also she hasn't nursed or eaten anything yet either. :sigh:

William became dehydrated too. Did you feel her soft spot? If it is sunken then she is dehydrated. I would just keep trying liquids in small amounts. Maybe using a dropper or even letting her suck on an ice cube a little. Poor little girl. I hope you guys get to the Dr & she doesn't need an IV. Sometimes as babies get bigger they can have nights they don't urinate. Will has done it before even when he's completely hydrated.

Stay away from Google hun. It'll just drive you crazy! I would call the doctor back. It's Monday, so they are usually slammed on Mondays. Hope you get a call back soon

Ok, they just called back. We're getting dressed and getting there by 10:30 (central time). Concerns about dehydration and how congested her lungs are. Will post an update when we get back.
Thanks everyone!!

I would worry about dehydration at this point. If you freeze Pedialyte, they usually like to suck on the crushed "ice".
Aidan was very sick just these last 2 weeks. Same thing you describe...but she was peeing. The doctor said to hydrate as much as possible...even formula (or breastmilk) was good. Check for dry mouth, eyes, and skin that doesn't "bounce" back after being depressed.
I would take her into urgent care JUST based on the fact of her dry diaper. Then again, we almost lost Aidan to dehydration at birth, so...I'm a freak about that.
I hope everything is okay soon...KUP!
