Okay, so those ads about how "I get my kids to eat healthy by putting Nutella on their food" really set my teeth on edge. I mean, I like Nutella, who doesn't? But telling yourself your kids are eating healthy because they eat a piece of whole grain toast or a banana with Nutella on it? Nutella which has 200 calories in 2 tablespoons 99 of which are from fat. 11 grams of fat on a banana does not make the banana a healthy snack. Sure we'd all eat "healthy" foods if we dipped them in a buttery chocolate hazelnut spread.
If you want to give your kids Nutella, great. Go for it! I love it, I wouldn't begrudge Cash some on toast or fruit if he wanted it. But I'm not going to sit there and pat myself on the back for his healthy eating.
So I thought that whole ad campaign was bad, right? Last night in Parents mag I saw a worse one.
CHANGE THE WAY YOUR KIDS SEE WATER! With new Kool-Aid Fun Fizz Drink Drops!
Okay, so I add a tablet to my kid's water that turns it bright neon red and makes it taste like Kool Aid and this is changing their attitude about water how? Oh but wait, each tablet is ONLY 5 CALORIES!!! Chock full of aspartame, artificial colors, flavors, sodium bicarbonate, phenylalanine etc...sure, but just 5 wee little alories! So basically giving my kids diet Kool Aid is going to make them change the way they see water, how? Like they'll see it as a way to get a nice sweet chemical-packed fruity beverage as opposed to just that boring clear stuff that adults drink?
Again, people want to give their kids Hawaiian Punch, they can go right ahead. But giving their kids Hawaiian Punch and pretending it's teaching them to make more healthy diet choices? Wrong wrong wrong.
