View Full Version : Allergic to my rings?

I've never had any allergies (besides to beestings, but it seems like that's very common).
Kirk got me a new wedding ring for Christmas 2008 since my original set was starting to fall off when I had lost weight after having Addie. The original set was yellow gold and had been worn 24 hours a day for 4 years +. The new ring was white gold and I had been wearing it since Christmas 08.
Sometime in January this year, I started noticing that I was itchy under my ring, so I took it off and it was red and irritated, so I left it off and after a few days it was like new skin was growing back. Once everything cleared up, I put the ring back on and a couple weeks later it did it again. I assumed that I must have some sort of allergy to white gold, so I started wearing my original set once my skin cleared up. Those rings started doing the same thing. Now it's been about 2 weeks and it's all healed up and new skin is there, but it still looks really dry.
I'm considering getting Kirk's name tattooed there and just be done with it, but my dad mentioned that there are metals in the tattoo ink, so I could have a reaction. :sigh:
I don't know what to do. I really hate not wearing something. The rings themselves aren't the big deal, just the meaning behind wearing them.
Anyway...anyone have any experience with this?

That's weird that you would start having a reaction after all this time. I am no help what so ever, but I hope you can get it figured out cause I would hate not being able to wear my rings too.

Weird coincidence...I'm having the same issues with my set! I've scratched my skin raw under my rings. The only thing I can think of is that it's getting warmer...maybe sweating underneath the rings is causing a reaction?
I also contribute mine to pregnancy. lol!

YES! My bracelet which is from Tiffany's so I guess it's silver?? No clue has been making my wrist itch like CRAZY! I've been wearing this bracelet for 10 years no so I have no idea what's going on.
I think there are certain inks that have allergies like the ones they get from octopus but not sure if that's still around.

I read somewhere (after googling of course) that it's common to develop an allergy to white gold after you've been pregnant, but I don't understand why the yellow gold did it too?
One theory is the liquid soap here at work seems to dry everyone's hands out. Maybe it's getting trapped under my rings?

That's a possibility especially since it is happening with both rings. Slip your rings off when you wash or dry your hands for a week or so and see what happens.

White gold is just rhodium plated yellow gold so it makes sence why you would have a reaction to both...On the other hand I have had this happen too. It happened a couple times and I don't have any problems anymore so I have know idea what caused it. Also after I had Shane I have odd reactions to some earings. Something I have never had before and they are not cheap either. Hmmmm sorry I'm no help...

That was going to be my suggestion. I have this problem and rather than take my ring off and risk it falling down a drain in a public restroom I make sure to use a paper towel (or tissue) and move my ring up and down so that I get it dried/wiped off. The irritation I was getting is much better now, I still get a dry patch of skin there sometimes though.

I was going to say soap too.
Are they thick bands? I get that when water and soap - it just irritates my finger.

Nope, they aren't very thick at all.

This happens to me, and I find it happens more when I wash my hands a lot more than I normally do .. its like soap or something gets stuck underneath there and makes my skin break out. :/
