So Pedi doesn't want to introduce PB until 2. MIL says 4 or 5 :smack:

Matt had some morsels that were PB and he did just fine. He also had a bite of my sandwich once without me thinking and was just fine.

Can I just go ahead and give him some on bread? I'm running out of options here. Tell me it's okay!

I think it's fine. But then again if you've seen the pictures on my Facebook, you'd also see that I think it's perfectly fine for Aiden to eat it from the jar.

Jack eats peanut butter. I would think since he is fine having peanut butter that if you feel like he is okay eating it, he more than likely is. You are his mom and mothers always know best :thumb:

You're fine :hehe: He's fine.

Dylan started PB at 1...Aidan has tried it around 1, but doesn't like it. I give her PBnJs and she just eats the Jelly side. :hehe:

Try it on some bread if you want! He's old enough now.

WIC in Ohio gives the option of beans or peanut butter for 2 and over as a protein supplement. I started Nathaniel on a few bites here and there of peanut butter since 1, and he's fine. I would test him with it to make sure he doesn't have an allergy, and if he doesn't react, let him have it :hehe:

I've read and heard that the later You introduce things to children, the more likely they are to having an allergic reaction to them.

Averie had peanut butter for the first time last week. My other kids it was always one year so I honestly didn't think twice about it until I read this thread. OOPS!!

Addie has had it since she was 1 and hasn't had any issues.

When my boys were little the age was 1 yr before introducing it. So I gave them a bite or two on bread after a year and they did fine.

If it were me...Id give it to him.

I would say it's fine, Carson has been eating it since about 16months and has been fine with it.

Go for it, just spread it thinly because it's a choking hazard when it's big glops

We started around 18 months for real....but he's had a few bites here and there since around 15-16 months. I'd say you're fine if he hasn't had any reactions yet with the small amounts!

Give him a piece of bread with a thin layer and keep a close eye on him, no reactions and I'd say you're fine!

Tha's actually the opposite of what happens. Kids are more likely to have an allergic reaction to things their bodies aren't ready to process at an earlier age. My oldest had a reaction to peanut butter at a year old but is fine with it now.

We've been told that blood tests for allergies aren't accurate until they're 3. If he's had it a few times already and hasn't reacted he's probably fine especially if there's no history of allergies in either of your families. If my DH wasn't allergic to peanuts we'd have given them to Ben already. He'll get a spoonful of peanut butter very soon then we'll take him to see an allergist and have blood work done.

Thanks ladies!

I'm still so worried. What do I do if he has a reaction?

Conner started eating PB&J when he was one. I think he's fine if none of those bothered him.

Call the pedi if it seems like a mild reaction otherwise call 911 depending on what type of reaction he has. If he breaks out in hives then a simple call to the pedi would be ok but if he seems to have problems with swelling or trouble breathing then I would take him to ER or call 911.

:hide: I think I just scared myself!!! :hehe:

I don't want to get yelled at  I can blame it on DH! :hmmm:

The twins have been eating peanut butter for the last 3-4 months. They've always done really well with it, but I don't use tons of it.. a thin layer on a sandwich is more than sufficient for them, and they love it. :) In fact that's what we all just had for lunch. lol!

Since he has already had a few bites here and there and didn't have a reaction...I would just do a thin layer on half a piece of bread and see how that goes.

It's a great source of protein for our picky eaters!;)

Just have some Benadryl on hand. You could call your pedi before you give Matt the PB and ask what the dose is for his weight. Make sure you tell the doc why you're asking so they don't think you're trying to use the Benadryl to make him go to sleep or something crazy like that. :hehe: If he has problems breathing at all, call 911. I want to try PB with Layla but since Sierra had a reaction at an early age I guess I'll have to wait until Layla is a little older.

I'm forgetful...is there a reason why you think he'll have a reaction? PB reaction in the family?

Elaine

I was going to say the same thing about Benadryl. Just have some on hand if for no other reason than to make you feel better. :hehe: You can always talk to a pharmacist about how much to give him if you can't get a hold of your doctor.

No one is allergic well except my MIL and she keeps telling me to wait until he's 4 or 5 and I just don't want to. I think that's stretching it a bit far. I just hear so many things and I've seen kids that had allergies and the lengths they go through and it just freaks me out.

When I went to get Benadryl for our trip (just in case--thanks to Nada ;)) I only found Children's and not infants...

Jo have you tried almond butter?

That's what we do with Isabella (holding off on PB until 2...maybe 3) and she looooves it! I just get it at the natural food store. I get her MaraNatha brand, it's organic, no stir and pretty good IMO. Still a good source of protein (not AS good as peanut butter but still) with no allergy risk factor.

Almond butter is also a lot more nutrient dense than peanut butter and contains half the amount of saturated fat. It also has 8 times more calcium than regular peanut butter.

On that note, I'm going to make myself a peanut butter sandwich :thumb:

Oh wait...so stupid me--they can have almond butter instead?? It's not the same as PB??

I have a huge jar of almond butter in the fridge!

Elaine

Almonds are a common allergen but I don't think they're as common as peanuts. If you don't have any severe allergies in your immediate family I wouldn't worry about it. What's your MIL allergic to? Or did you already say and I should just look back through the posts? :hehe:

She's allergic to peanuts.

I'll try the almond butter! Thanks :)

I think you're probably fine giving him the peanut butter. I don't know that I would if I were in your shoes but I'm a bit of a gick that way. :hehe: Ben just had his first taste of peanut butter the other day and now we're just waiting for the appointment with the allergist to have the blood work done.

Good luck! I hope he isn't allergic. I've seen what those mom goes through sometimes and it doesn't look like fun. Luckily all the schools around here changed to peanut free rooms.

I would say he would be fine. Just start out small and watch him.Plus if no one in your family has issues with pb... I gave it to Eli at one and to be honest our pedi told us 1year soo I really think things are up to the Mom's and Babies...
