I really think is crazy!!!! the 7 hour school day doesn't end when the kid gets home. Then there is something called homework.
7 hours? I couldn't watch the whole thing...didn't realize it was that long. Holy crap.

Oh goody. More free day care for the parents and more time in my day that I have to discipline someone else's kids.
Seriously. We are there long enough to teach if the kids just shut the eff up.

I used to be in school for 7 hours a day. That's where I got that from. And he wants to expand....

Total crap. Kids need more than classroom instruction to be healthy and well-rounded.

Oh, this is an old video :hehe:
He hasn't said something about this in a while.
I wouldn't mind longer days if I had a longer lunch break (right now it's 25 minutes) and better behaved kids...Kids who actually come to school to learn and are at grade level (the majority) when they get there. I hate babysitting and that's what half my day is already.
Obama is so out of touch with American schools it's not even funny. Come to my school, Mr. Obama...tell me a longer day is what we need. Jackass.

Yea. :thumb:
There's also something called sports and art and other things that people do before dinner time.
I would LOVE to do more teaching in my classroom, but they don't let us kick out the troublemakers. So I babysit.

Longer school days = higher taxes. Gotta pay a longer teacher salary, higher utilities . . .

They won't be paying us more  That was a good one though.

SOOO Agree!! I am sorry I would like to see and spend some time with my kids before they go to bed every night!

What I would like to know is where all the money would come from to fund this. Even if they screw teachers (likely) they would still have to pay for the extra utilities usage.
Also with all of the pressure on teachers due to the stupid standardized tests, it is hard to feel like you have time to cover everything. I can see where some might see this has a good solution. However, when I was still teaching in the U.S., there was such a ridiculous emphasis on the state testing that my kids only got recess twice a week for 15 minutes. That was the only time we were supposed to go out and let the kids be kids and play. Yet, we wonder why so many kids can't pay attention in class, have trouble playing with their peers, and are obese!
My biggest issue with one that has already been pointed out, that you don't learn everything in the classroom. Kids need time to play sports, take music lessons, try out for plays, etc. One of the things I really like about the Dutch view on education is they treat it like their workday. Once the kids are done with the school day, they are done with school. Little to no homework is given because they want the kids to have time for extracurricular activities and to spend time with their families. Which is just as important as anything they'll learn in the classroom.

And if you're school is anything like my past schools, the better at your job you are and the more you teach, the more likely they are to give you the troublemakers because "you're so good at your job, that you're the best teacher for this student". So frustrating!

We already have 7 hour school days, and I wouldn't mind them a little longer if we got a longer lunch too! We only get 15 minutes!!!! That includes time to warm up your food, use the bathroom (which is often the only time all day I get to!), and get all the kids out of your room to the lunchroom!
Plus, the badly behaved kids...at the high school level more kids would just drop out or skip.

My idea is simple.
At 15 you know if you are a student or not. Right? I mean...there are the kids with NO future. They don't like school etc. So...put them in a trade school at 15 with 3 years of apprenticeship so when they graduate they can get a freakin job.
Not everybody needs to know calculus :puke: Not every one needs to read "Where the Red Fern Grows". I'd be happy if my brother actually LEARNED something while in HS. How about being an electrician? My cousin makes great money and had 2 years training as a grown man. Why not train them before they graduate.
I wish the big suits listened to these ideas.

I forgot to mention another thing I love about Dutch schools, how much break/planning time the teachers get.
Every day the kids get a 20 minute recess in the morning and an hour lunch which includes a 30 minute recess. The teachers take turns monitoring the morning recess, but always have the full hour for lunch.
Then the teachers also get 45 minutes when the students go to Dutch class. And on the days the kids have P.E. that's another extra hour of planning the teachers get. They also get 30 minutes on the days the kids go to the media center. Wednesdays are always half days so the teachers have the afternoons to plan.
I was just absolutely thrilled that I got a whole hour for lunch like most working people do!

Know how much we get? An hour a month  SOMETIMES. Usually our plan time is taken over by our principal who just talks the whole time
When I student taught in Santa Monica, we had an hour a day! The kids would go to music, PE or art and teachers planned :look: AMAZING.
My school has no computers (well, they are 10 years old and don't work :thumb: ) And last year we had not ONE grade level meeting.
People just don't know...they really do not know.

In Florida, we were supposed to have 55 minutes a day when the kids went to specials (PE, Music, etc). However meetings were always scheduled during that time. We were lucky if we got one planning period a week.
I don't know about you, but I rarely left school at the time the teacher work day officially ended. I can't imagine how late I'd be working if the school day was extended!

I leave every day at 2:30. I have children of my own that need me. I go home and enjoy my life. Teaching is my career, but it's not my life. I love it, but there are more important things to me. However, I do get there at 7am, when school starts at 8:10 :hehe: So...I get stuff done.

I didn't have kids when I was teaching so I often stayed until 6pm, but I also got there at 8 and school started at 8:30. I was not an early riser! I also overextended myself by creating and running the school's drama club and Student Council. If I had kids, there's no way I would have been able to do all that!

I love my children. I do. I love them to pieces...and I will miss last years class.
But almost every year, I get the "behaviour problem" kids, why? Because my principal says she knows I can do it.
Thanks. I mean, I know I can do it too-- I have no other choice!! ;)
But don't grade ME on THEIR test scores....grrr....
