Well, if you’d like to forego purchasing a toy, doll or video game this year, a creative approach that you can take is making them their own birthday gift basket. If this is something that is piquing your interest and you’d like a few design ideas, we’ve got five great ones for you below:

Goodies gift basket. Just about every child enjoys sweets. So, why not make them a gift basket full of home-baked cookies and brownies? You can add to it some of their favorite kinds of candy or you can even make some of your own. One website that can walk you through the process of how to make homemade candy is Candy.About.com. Just go to the site and put “how to make homemade candy” in the search field.

Art gift basket. Do they enjoy doing arts and crafts? If so, another approach that you can take is making them their own art gift basket. Inside, you can include colored pencils, paints, brushes, sketch pads and even an apron. Hobby Lobby is one website that sells some really cute ones.

Princess gift basket. For the little girl who is near and dear to your heart, it’s always fun to make them a gift basket that has a bit of a princess theme to it. Local party supply stores usually carry boas and princess banners. You can shop at a jewelry store like Claire’s for a tiara and also some “princes theme” jewelry. Also, if you wanted to include a T-shirt or decor pillow that has the word “Princess” on it, you can order one on a website like Amazon or you can get it customized on websites like Etsy.

Action figures basket. So what can you do for the little fella in your life? How about making him a gift basket that centers around one of his favorite action figures? You can fill it up with some toys, a pair of pajamas with his favorite figure on it and perhaps even a costume. To find a list of websites that sell them, go to your favorite search engine and put “kid’s costumes” in the search field.

Books gift basket. One of the best things about books is that they are a wonderful way to feed into a child’s imagination. That’s why another awesome idea is to create a books gift basket. You can put some classic children’s stories inside of it, along with a journal or diary.

Once you have chosen the theme for your basket, don’t forget to go to a store like Pottery Barn, Joanne’s or Paper Mart to pick up a basket, some cellophane, tissue paper and a bow. Once you have all of these items in hand, you are well on your way to designing the perfect kid’s birthday basket. Have fun!
